El Baobab es un \u00e1rbol gigantesco de flores ef\u00edmeras (que duran un solo d\u00eda) y tiene frutos carnosos con una c\u00e1scara peluda, que son comestible.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Existen leyendas en \u00c1frica como por ejemplo, que en los primeros d\u00edas del mundo los dioses repartieron semillas entre todos los animales para que las plantaran; las del baobab se la dieron a la hiena, \u00e9sta un poco torpe, y enojada por haberlas recibido en \u00faltimo lugar, decidi\u00f3 plantarlas al rev\u00e9s, lo que explicar\u00eda la extra\u00f1a aspecto que tienen los Baobabs, como si sus ra\u00edces estuvieran en el aire.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Algunos \u00e1rboles pueden llegar a 2000 a\u00f1os de antig\u00fcedad. \u00a0Durante gran parte del a\u00f1o (la estaci\u00f3n seca) el \u00e1rbol parece muerto, ya que no tiene hojas, pero su tronco masivo en realidad act\u00faa como suculenta ya que puede almacenar desde 6.000 hasta 100.000 litros de agua, para soportar duras condiciones de sequ\u00eda. <\/span>
\nCada parte del \u00e1rbol tiene un uso para la gente: su corteza se utiliza para tela y cuerda, las hojas se utilizan en los alimentos y para\u00a0medicinas, la fruta es rica en vitamina C (por eso un poco \u00e1cida), las semillas se utilizan para hacer vino. \u00a0La corteza es esponjosa y tiene muchas cavidades huecas, y actua como un refugio para variedad de especies de animales.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are 9 species of the baobab tree (genus Adansonia<\/em>) \u2013 6\u00a0from Madagascar, 2\u00a0from Africa and the Arabic peninsula and 1\u00a0from Australia, which is almost identical to the African type.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Baobab is a giant tree of ephemeral white flowers (that last only one day), and fleshy fruits with a hairy shell. \u00a0The interior seeds are edible. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are many legends about the baobabs, for example: During Genesis, the first days of the world, God divided seeds for animals to plant; the baobab was given to the hyena. \u00a0Since it was a bit clumsy, and angry for having last choice, it decided to plant them upside down, which would explain the strange aspect of the Baobabs, as if its roots were in the air.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Some trees can reach 2000 years. \u00a0For much of the year (the dry season) the tree looks dead as it has no leaves, but in fact its massive trunk acts as a succulent and stores water. \u00a0It can store from 6,000 to 100,000 litres of water, to endure harsh drought conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nEvery part of the tree is put to some use by people: its bark is used for cloth and rope, the leaves are used in food and as medicines, the fruit is rich in vitamin C (that\u00b4s why it\u00b4s a bit sour), the seeds are used to make wine. \u00a0Trees also provide shelter and food for animals.<\/span><\/p>\n
