The Masai Mara Migration – Unique natural spectacle

If there is a particular season to visit the Masai Mara Game Reserve, this would be at the time of the great migration.  The image of thousands of wildebeests who strech as far as the eye can see on the plains of the Mara is one of the unique natural spectacle in the world.

Shortly after the rains that turn the plains of the Masai Mara golden green, the migration of the wildebeest occurs.  They are accompanied by vast numbers of zebra and gazzeles which makes the Masai Mara a natural wonder and at the same time a life cycle repairing the grassland of East Africa.   From mid- July to mid-October about 1.3 million animals congregate in Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya looking for the green pastures of grass.

Wildebeest gradually come together in a huge and single herd until the dry season spends the supply of green grass.  The smell of rain coming from the north attracts animals and the migration sets in motion.

The sight of thousands of animals in the plains of Masai Mara is simply spectacular and amazing, wherever you look, you can see huge herds of animals that are lost in the horizon.  Behind the herds follow other predators; lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles feast on the vast number of animals that are available  with the given ease of hunting them.

Predators are not the only obstacle to the herds, the crossing of the Mara river drowns many victims, asphyxiated and also hunted by huge crocodiles.

Thanks to the customs of the Masai tribe, nature in this region has been protected until today for the reason that the Maasai are herders and not hunters, this has helped to maintain the balance between human presence and animals which makes this region of Africa as one of the best for watching African wildlife .
